Charles & Associates (Trinidad and Tobago): The third reading and subsequent passing of the Firearms (Amendment) Bill took place in Parliament on Monday 9th September 2019. The Act seeks to amend the Firearms Act, Chap. 16.01 by adding 28 clauses. The effect of the passing of the bill is such that there will be greater sanctions/penalties for persons found being in possession of illegal firearms. The bill is one of many initiatives towards fighting crime and or bringing about a reduction in crime, which has been at an all time high in the Republic recently. Persons are encouraged to review the bill, to get an appreciation of its contents. For example, third time offenders risk spending the balance of their natural life in prison. Offences such as trafficking in firearms and prohibited weapons were also introduced. We encourage all to take a look at the bill, which is cited as the Firearms (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
